Hindsight is a valuable tool, so it is said.
This iconic image of New York skyline, taken on New Years Day in 1983, held no portent of the world changing events some 18 years later. Yet within the machinations within these buildings stated objectives were being configured and the toppling of the two great edifices and Building 7 planned as a "New Pearl Harbour" event would be documented a years later as an intended outcome for powerful hegemonic forces.
For myself in those heady days of large format photography, I just witnessed a New Year dawning where potential was still on an active rising curve. Today this image is an emotive, reminiscence of what could have become under different circumstancc. It becomes an 'Elegy for Naïve Innocence'

This incredible dawn shot from the New Jersey shoreline captured the beauty and iconic nature of this view of the entrance to the US and Manhattan.
Iconic does not get more so than this. Sunrise on a cityscape as breathtaking as it is familiar.
Since 1983 when I took this the world has changed and for the greater part not for the better. Like a fire burning and coursing its way in from the East it portends the fall of a mighty, yet vicious, self serving, self centered empire that tried so vengefully and deceitfully to change the world and place it under the specious control of its interpretation of Freedom and Democracy!
Like George Orwell so presciently predicted Truth became Lies, War became Peace. I like to feel this is a small record of history that stands on its own merits backing a story yet to be finished!

This was a miracle shoot. Shot on 10” x 8” large format in the days you could cart across the pond 40kg cases of camera equipment and pre lock down on mad air security, I set up on the edge of the sidewalk to catch the evening light of a midwinter day. Far fewer people in those days but interest none the less for the huge camera and black cloth I hid
under. Waited for the perfect mix of yellow cab and classic vehicle. Today it really is different. The empty lot built on, the traffic heavy and Hell’s Kitchen hip. Ah! the sentiment of bygone days captured forever!
Worth lugging all that kit!

Famed as the setting for many great movies, Love Story with O’Neil and MacGraw being one. This rink, an iconic statement of New York and of Central Park, has its own Hollywood story unfold shortly after I took this image in 1983.
Purchased and redesigned as the rink we have today. The Wollman Rink, as it was known, was allegedly sold to an English Real Ale entrepreneur who redeveloped it, having bought it for cents off the NYC council, who then agreed to pay the costs of development! Wily Brit!
This image is one of my favourites, not for the awards it cultivated but for the eternal symbolism it illustrates.
The young lad in the centre, standing absolutely still as the chaos of the world spins around him.
A great metaphor for us all!

Heligan Gardens in Cornwall is one of the modern beauties of the horticultural world. Its rennaisance by Tim Smit who also created the stupendous Eden Project as a Millennium marker rediscovered the Lost Gardens of Heligan and it now is a testament to the most beautiful horticultural landscaping, vision of planning, rejuvenation of Victorians genius and a place of peace, calm and meditation.
This architypical English image caught what Heligan can be on a sunny crow filled sky day!

So much beauty in Italy, so many extraordinary landscapes. However when Nature steps in and offers her golden light on things we enter the realms of magnificence. The window for light has always been the most fascinating for me to study over the years. There can be human interrupted additions of filters etc however the real thing is unbeatable. On the way back from visiting Capri this moment presented itself. Never a moment to ‘think’ just capture, because the next moment it is gone, changed.

Callanish Stone Circle, is the Scottish Stonehenge for many. Set on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean on the Isle of Lewis, the largest isle of the Western Isles it is one of the vibrant, impressive ‘sound’ circles still standing. Those that built it knew a thing or ten about sound, how vibration connected the many dimensions.
I arrived with trusty large format camera, a Linhof Press Camera, circa 1945. It is one of the most trusty travel
hardened pieces of kit I have had.... and rare. As I set up for this specific shot awaiting the light, alone except for the stones and heather moorland an old Trabant chugged to a halt and out stepped a youngster from East Berlin with the
exact same kit. We chatted and he fresh from college in Germany travelled Europe with 25 sheets of film and the
same number of polaroids. He showed me the few he had already taken. Each image I would have died for. He 21 and I late 40s.
A hardened, no expense spared advertising photographer with little concern for frugality face to face with a one shot one sheet master. In that moment he taught me about excess and waste. That day changed my life.
Light arrived, shots taken in the bag. I stepped into the circle, went up to the centre stone, sliced through by a shard of crystal and proceeded to ‘sound’ into the stone throwing each harmonic sound up to the top. When it hit the top the sound split and projected itself into each of the outer stones. Each harmonic echoed and re-echoed round and round, till there was a mighty orchestra of sound. I imagined it was all in my mind, my head. As I finished I turned. The young master stood outside the circle mouth wide open, transfixed. I asked what he heard. He replied “A whole orchestra of sound like no other.”
So I had not imagined it. He asked how I did it. I led him inside the circle showed him what to do and left him to
experience the same extraordinary magic. When he came out I told him this was my gift to him for what he gave me.
Having shown me the less is more principle. He learned more about himself in that moment than ever before.
We parted changed. I am certain his image of Callanish was equally, if not more magnificent than mine.
Such are the gifts we are afforded whenever we allow life to show us.

The Valley of the Mother of the World has been immortalised by Nicolas Roerich, archaeologist, theosophist, philosopher and prolific painter. He painted this valley depicting The Mother of The World.
When I walked into the valley along the river depicted in this painting, I came across a shrine and stupa erected by the followers of Roerich decades back.
In the image you make out the reclining head top right with her body extending along the valley.
Towards the viewer her arm stretches forward to us beckoning us into her bosom.
A magical and magnificent place where silence reigns and beauty breathes her silken breath.

Essaouria, Morocco: This image catches a meeting of our technological age meeting Nature’s immensity. As a photographer who has learned to read, love and celebrate nature’s enormity I was somewhat saddened to witness the two people in this shot exemplifying so much of the isolationism created by our handhelds/obsession with self absorption. Neither of them ever looked up, became awed by the natural magnificence taking place around them. When they left they did so with total disregard for where they were and what they could have experienced. We by our own editing, blocking out, ignoring and obscuring the essential relationship to the natural world destroy
ourselves slowly. It is a sad but inevitable result of disconnect freely allowed and created by ourselves. It always end badly. Those that practice this may only know when it is way too late.

The towers of San Gimignano are a testament to the vying medieval monied interests of the age. Ancient families whose rule over certain artisanal industries, not unlike the corporate masters of the 21st century, made, were and engaged in being top dog in a real and sometimes vilent game.
Set alongside the towers of the WTC that existed till recently, the high rise money towers of Hong Kong, Dubai, USA and London there seems little change in rich people making towers to showcase their importance and wealth.
At least they had taste back in the day!
The depth, darkness of impending change and rich colours all add to a beautiful Tuscan heritage.

Part of a series shot around London, this image on the Piazza in Covent Garden has been a focal point for the arts since the old Covent Garden moved away from Central London. It exudes history, both contemporary and ancient.
I spent much time there as my printer Gene Nocon had his darkroom a few steps away from this viewpoint. This image contains the quirky, the fun and the planned.
A relatively empty space belies the crowds present yet unseen.
Backlighting accentuates the original well worn roadway, centuries old.
An image that brings many eras together via timeless changelessness, as I term it.
I can testify my long career behind the camera has revealed how light in its many shades and hues is able to act as some magic time machine painting so much depth into what is ostensibly a two dimensional view.

The pines of the Siberian mountain ranges offer a depth and vastness merging almost invisibly into the Siberian Taiga and Boreal forests covering these altitudes.
Lake Kucherla offers a point where the glacial river pauses before descending onwards to lower altitudes, where white water rapids on its way prepare the onlooker for the turbulence and excitement of a world existing at is

As a young boy I spent many happy hours with rod and line coaxing tench, carp and minnow onto my hook on the small lake we had on our farm. As we arrived at Lake Kucherla, at the heart of the Southern Siberian Alpine regions such memories flooded back. Watching the simple pleasure of young men relaxing, bantering and enjoying idyllic interaction in nature conveys so many lost pleasures we seem to have put aside in lieu of our technological gadgets and age. The smoke from the camp fire, the patience and meditation awaiting that touch on the line announcing capture is what so much of photography is all about - capturing the moment - in time.

Kerala, India:
This little rock outcrop in the middle of one of India’s densest and most dangerous jungles was where I needed to be. It is also the most sacred spot for one of India’s great saints, Swami Sivananda Paramahansa. It is where he became enlightened and went on to lead his followers in Siddha Samaj.
My assistant and I asked to stay over as I wished to photograph dusk and dawn. It was not residential and yet we were allowed to stay. That evening loaded with plate camera we trudged through the jungle eventually finding the hillock. As I prepared for the light to be just right I also felt the scene was not in balance. It needed something to balance the tree and bush. As the light became perfect suddenly out of nowhere pops a young lad, no more than seven and plonks himself down in lotus position.
Got it!
This was the result... yet having packed our bags darkness descended swiftly. Pitch black and we knew nothing of how to return to the ashram. Silently the young lad appeared again offered his hand and after an hour we had returned. The head of the ashram told us we were fortunate to have guidance as the jungle supported very dangerous animals at night.

Lake Akem, in the Southern Siberian Alpine region is the mirror of beauty catching the glacial melt from Mount
Belukha. Belukha stands at the epicentre of a meeting of four countries. Mongolia, China, Kazakhstan and Russia.
Camping beside these pure crystal waters, waking to drink the energised purity of the lake is an experience few are afforded. On either side the alpine slopes lead to lakes of every hue and colour - red, turquoise, green, blue and yellow. I am certain heaven’s meadows must have been the template for this wild flower, garlic filled, alpine flora painted all around.
The Altai Autonomous region of Southern Siberia is a unique and pristine wilderness. One as rare as the air in these heady heights. Worth every hardship of the 3/4 day expedition to reach here.

This is one of the most incredible stories of my shooting career. Shot at midday on the winter solstice in 1989 it revealed an insight so profound and miraculous I literally woke that time to the deeper truths in plain sight and throughout dimensions we have so little awareness of.
The story is expanded in my book An Evolutioary Journey - Life Lessons through the Lens. Suffice to say the symbolism given in this image was never interefered with with filters, lens trickery etc. Pre PS it gave the sun, representative of the masculine principle, Chephren, representative in the three pyramids as the feminine principle and a 13 pointed mandala of light. 13 being the numerological number for transformation. Meaning when the masculaine and feminine are balanced there is transformation into a deeper beingness of human.
Much more surrounded this gift and I expand on it in my talks and book.
It has turned out to be a marvellous image to meditate on and go deep into the Who am I space.
