With children so saturatingly captured with digital imaging, like most handheld imaging there is little comprehension as to how to attain great results. When photography was king catching the natural in kids in photos was a deifinitive art. Here I present some examples that made me the go to photographer who delivered natural.
Part of a shoot for a Japanese client promoting their new childrens fashion range, we attacked a very dry Umbrian field that needed lashings of water to muddy it.
The local fire brigade was only too happy to spray the whole field and soak it into mud. My young starlet could not help but stomp her abandon in the mud and give us exactly wjat we were looking for!

Another in the Japanese shoot in Umbria. The lake at its centre was one of the deepest lakes in the region. Most likely why the Germans on retreat in WW2 threw many pieces of armoury into it! For us its shallows were iseal for our young star to fill his hat with water, throw it in the air and let the whole lot fall back on him. I mean you really can't ask a kid to get more fun that that. The japanese to their credit really wanted the clothes to l;ook lived in - and they were!

An early representation of why Trapman was so called upon to shoot kids. Around the time of the Hovis commercials, it needed to exude all sorts of emotional draw down. This was definitely done in the vein of period piece, haunting past times that made the Hovis commercials such iconic ads.

With a superb back projection system (pre green screen days) for an image I had from visiting the Temple of Hathor and one of my most patient models prepared to be wrapped in insulating hessian for hours holding one tremendously professional toddler the trick was accomplished. In casting I immediately saw this pre-Raphaelite image take shape. She was perfect for it. We had great fun creating the set and she was fascinated by how water could be brought into the studio. Creating magic can be such fun especially when you have a vibrant child’s imagination assist you. My darkroom genius Gene Nocon created some great lith prints complementing the photographic look of a Julia Margaret Cameron I was after. The occasion was a campaign for a major Pharma corporate announcing some new way to spin the cancer therapy answer. Finding a model who was actually in the process was not the imperative.
This Beauty in Blue had lived with alopecia since an early age, so was ideal. During the session we talked and she felt comfortable enough to open up about her condition. Getting round the usual school yard teasing she wore wigs. Her baldness to me was utter beauty. Intuitively I felt her early experiences had brought on the condition and I shared my instincts. She immediately brightened as she listened to what she had always known, spoken by a stranger. She confided that what I shared was so helpful she felt she could now live life without wigs and celebrate her inner and outer beauty.
The campaign went on to win awards. Everyone was delighted. Nearly a year later we connected again and she told me very shortly after our meeting her hair started to grow back as her life began to change.
In life we may never know how a few words, a chance encounter and inspired, inspirational insight can utterly create transformation in another.
This time I was privy to results - a rare blessing in itself. We are so utterly interdependent of each other if we could just recognise it. There are gifts that grow from living that reality.
